"I received a letter and check saying I won the lottery..."

Have you received a letter through the mail saying you've won a lottery jackpot? Did it enclose a check for a few thousand dollars to cover your 'surcharges' or 'processing fees'? Well so have thousands of other people I'm afraid!

Let me be clear from the top. This is a known scam. No, there isn't the slightest chance it is genuine. No, none whatsoever. It is 100% a scam.

Here's how the scam works. You bank the check you have been sent to cover 'surcharges' (usually around $4,000). You then wire money to the bank details provided in the letter to pay the surcharges, so the company can send out your millions. Well guess what? The millions don't exist, the winnings are never sent. And the check you banked bounces some weeks later because is is fake. You lose the money from the check. You can't get the money back that you sent because it was wired. You get charged for the bounced check by your bank.

No genuine lottery would EVER operate in this way.
No genuine lottery EVER asks for money to process a claim. (Why would they, it makes no sense!?)
No genuine lottery EVER pays a prize out to someone who didn't buy a ticket!

The check is fraudulent. It's a very good fake check, but it's still not real. The bank account number and the company on the check will be real - but they have nothing to do with the fraud, they are just another victim!

If you bank the check it may appear to clear at first, but it will be traced later. So please don't think you can get away with keeping the money, it's not a guaranteed payment, it's not cash and it's not your money. The check will eventually bounce, and you will get charged by your bank. (I know of at least 2 people who have faced some tough questions in their bank branch - not surprising, they are trying to bank a fake check - who ends up looking like the fraudster..?)

The real scammers are operating out of Canada and using cell phones, so as yet they haven't been tracked down. They will be though. What goes around comes around, and these guys are overdue some major pain.

But please folks. If you receive one of these fake check lottery scam letters, please don't contact me about them. Please just send it to your local police or mail fraud department. And if you've already been caught, don't feel too bad because you are not the only one - but please do report it to your local police.

What Are The Chances of Getting a Six (and what does that have to do with the lottery anyway!)?

[Q] My friend reckons if he buys one ticket, his odds of winning the lottery jackpot are about 1-in-14 million. He says if he buys just one ticket in his lifetime, the odds are exactly the same as if he wastes money on buying a ticket every week. Is he right?

[A] No.

Simplify it to dice. Always seems easier with dice :-)

Let's say somebody was offering you and your friend a million bucks if you could throw a 6. Only snag is, one of you gets to have 1,000 throws of the dice, the other only gets one throw. Would your friend really let you have the 1,000 throws without the slightest complaint..?

The chances of getting a 6 in one throw are 1/6.

For two throws, there are three ways to get a six:
[1] First throw IS a six, second throw NOT a six
[2] First throw NOT a six, second throw IS a six
[3] Both throws are a six.

Chances of [1] are 1/6 x 5/6 = 5/36
(i.e. 1-in-6 chance of getting the 6, then 5-in-6 of getting anything but a six)
Chances of [2] are 5/6 x 1/6 = 5/36
Chances of [3] are 1/6 x 1/6 = 1/36

Total chance of getting at least one six in two throws of the dice is therefore 11/36, or just over 30%.

The formula for rolling at least one 6 in n rolls is: 1 - (5/6)^n

So even just 20 throws gives you a 97% chance of a 6 :-)

The New Monday Charities Lottery in the UK

A new lottery has now arrived in the UK. The first draw is set to take place on 8th May 2006.

monday - The Charities Lottery is being launched by Chariot, a company set up in order to provide a 'fairer' lottery, that also pays more to charity. The UK National Lottery supports many good causes, but has received much criticism for some donations that didn't meet with the popular media idea of 'a good cause'.

The new game will be a Monday night draw, hence the games name... 'monday'. The jackpot will be capped at £200,000, but there will be no rollovers because there will be a guaranteed winner every week. If no-one matches 6 balls to win the jackpot, then the person nearest to winning will get the jackpot!

The type of game hasn't been announced, but Chariot say the jackpot odds will be better than for the UK Lotto.

Charity is a big focus of the game, and charities will received 30p for every £1 spent.

Lottery Winner or Greedy Victim?

"My name is Dora, and i have recieved a letter along with a check stating that I've come in 3rd place in the lottery drawing that took place on 3/17/2006. My reference number is ABDW 10/665RG8 and my winner number is 0087475. On this letter it stated to get in touch with David Rogers of Imperial Financial Management Group. I've made several attempts of trying to reach this person and have been unsuccessful. When I call, I get a voice message that says leave your name and reference number and someone will return your call, but at the end of the call it says no more room for messages. What can I do to claim my winnings from EURO LOTTERY. My home number is 770-xxx-xxxx, please respond by call me or email me at xxx. Thanks"

Is it greed? Is it desperation? Why would anyone believe this is real!

You've not heard of the lottery, you've certainly never bought a ticket - you couldn't have, it doesn't exist.

You get a letter to say you've won - but when did you ever give out your name and address when buying a lottery ticket..?

You've tried to contact them but the cell phone isn't picking up, so you try the yahoo.com email address - real lottery companies are not hard to get hold of! And they certainly don't use free email addresses!

You've banked the cheque but you're not sure how to send the payment to process your claim... WHAT? How can that make any sense at all, why would they send you a cheque, and then ask you for money to process a claim! That's insane. This is where greed really takes over common sense. That cheque is stolen or fake, it will bounce (eventually) leaving you out of pocket. And what lottery would EVER ask you to pay money to receive a prize, that's just so dumb.

These scammers only exist because there are enough people around who are desperate enough or greedy enough to believe their feeble lies. Please don't be one of them.

Win the Lottery or Get Run Over By a Bus... Hmmmmm, Decisions, Decisions...

I get this comment a lot. Mainly from people who only played EuroMillions during the massive jackpots over the last couple of weeks.

It usually goes something along the lines of having more chance of being run over by a bus than winning the jackpot, or more chance of Elvis turning out to be your long lost brother - you know, that kind of thing!

But the thing is, 3 lucky people did share that vast EuroMillions jackpot. So what are the chances of that?! What are the chances of 3 people all picking the same winning numbers..? Those 3 winners don't care about the long odds, they don't care about the doom mongers and "told you so's". They are too busy celebrating what DID happen, along with all those who also won smaller life changing sums of money.

So ignore the doom merchants. Yes, it may never happen, but it does happen to hundreds of people all over the world every single week. I guarantee it won't happen to those people who don't play the lottery. If you buy a ticket or join a syndicate, at least it COULD happen to you too!

A pat on the back today to the state of Missouri, USA for clamping down on a New York company that sells recommended lottery numbers -- numbers they claim put you "one step closer to actually winning some money off your state lottery." What bull!

'Multi-Plays of America Inc.' will cease doing business in Missouri under a court-approved agreement. Not the first US state to do so either.

Attorney General Jay Nixon had this to say: "The selection of numbers by the Missouri Lottery is a random process, and anyone who tells you they can predict what numbers will come up is purely guessing. You would be just as well off getting numbers from a fortune cookie."

Nixon also added, "But one thing is for sure: If anyone tries to take money from Missouri consumers by saying otherwise, eventually their luck will run out."

[So take note all you vendors of fake 'lottery systems'. If you can't prove your claim to be able to pick 'better' lottery numbers (and I know you can't!) it's time to start worrying if you are under investigation yet too...]

Be warned though 'Multi-Plays of America' are still operating in other area of the US at the moment, so don't waste your money if you live in the US and get a telesales call from them. Their 'recommended lottery numbers' are no better than entirely random selections.

UK Lotto Winner Jailed

Melvyn Howlett (45) who won £1.2 million on the UK Lotto was sentenced to three months in prison for trying to smuggle 14,000 pouches of tobacco into the UK.

He said he was stocking up on tobacco to hand out free to guests at his party to celebrate winning - he was found guilty of trying to evade £20,000 of excise duty.
